The number of Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices has been on a steady rise over the past 15 years. In 2005, there were 0 IoT connected devices, and by 2021, this number has increased to 10 billion. This is an increase of 66.67% from 2020 to 2021. In 2006, there were 6 million IoT connected devices and the number has grown steadily since then; by 2007, there were 11 million devices, an 83.33% increase from the previous year. By 2008, the number of devices had increased to 20 million, an 81.82% increase from 2007. The number of IoT connected devices continued to increase at a rapid rate, with a 90% increase from 2009 to 2010, and a 100% increase from 2013 to 2014. From 2020 to 2021, the percentage increase in IoT connected devices was the highest it had been since 2006, with a 66.67% increase. This is followed by a 28% increase from 2022 to 2023, and a 25% increase from 2021 to 2022.
The total number of IoT connected devices is expected to reach 16 billion by 2023. This means that the total number of IoT connected devices will have increased by 1600% from 2005 to 2023. The rapid growth of IoT connected devices is a testament to the ever–growing importance of the Internet of Things in our everyday lives.
